ESSAY WRITING CONTEST

This year, the theme for the National Book Week Celebration is LIBRARIES FOR PROGRESS. Contestants shall be asked to write an essay on a topic related to this year's theme.

LOVE AT BOOK SIGHT

This year, the HS LIBRARY in coordination with the English Area present LOVE AT BOOK SIGHT: DOOR DECORATION CONTEST in celebration of the National Book Week on November 2011. The activity would be a celebration of creativity and love for reading as students get to decorate their doors with their favourite scene from their HRR book.

AMAZING RACE

They say, everything comes in threes. The Library presents, on its third and last leg, Amazing Race: The Last Hoorah!

The activity shall simulate the concept of “The Amazing Race” wherein groups of pairs shall battle with one another through a race. There will be 10 stations for the whole game; each station constitutes a challenge. All pairs must complete/undergo all stations to unveil the “mystery” message. The pair to finish the race with the least time shall be the winner.

Every year, the American library Association releases titles of works that have been banned or challenged in certain areas of the country because of their unorthodox content or ideas. However, through the joint efforts of librarians, teachers, and book publishers the books are retained for circulation.

Banned books week in essence is a celebration and an advocacy of our right to intellectual freedom and access to information.

This year, the CSA HS Library decided to celebrate the banned books week not only to expose the students to this reality that is still happening in other parts the world regarding books and reading; but to make them realize also the freedom that they enjoy and we’d like them to keep: to read and think freely.

The DEAR time for December, originally scheduled on the 13th has been moved to December 8, Wednesday. The materials to be used must focus on the theme: faith and religion.

Also a reminder, cut-off time for borrowing books during DEAR day is an hour before the scheduled DEAR time. Therefore, we will not entertain students who will come to the library to borrow a book during the actual DEAR time.

This year, the CSA HS Library together with the English Department launched the DROP EVERYTHING AND READ PROGRAM wherein all the members of the high school community are enjoined to drop everything and read a book for an hour.

Today, several classes from all year levels are tasked to do a book hunt to prepare for the reading program on Tuesday. It's a very busy day for the library!

The long wait has come to an end! Last June 26, 2010 the CSA HSLibrary reopened after almost two months of hardcore overhaul of its physical arrangement.

The lights are brighter, space has been emphasized, more rooms have been made for individual reading and group discussions; making it more inviting and conducive for study, leisurely reading, and research for students and faculty. A complete "expansion pack" that not only contributed to the improvement our library services, but also to the increase in utilization of our services by our students.

By the first week of August, we formally welcomed the students through a month-long celebration of the Buwan ng Wika through "Punla : Wika Bilang Punla ng Diwang Makabayan ; Wika Bilang Punla ng Kamalayang Makakalikasan" an exhibit featuring the works of some of the well-renowned Filipino writers/poets/songwriters on the importance of language, nationalism, and stewardship of God's creations; along with the sole display of newly-acquired Filipiniana books.

Yup! The CSA HS Library is ready for an upgrade!

Last Tuesday, May 18, 2010 our team of blue-collared workers started to roll-up their sleeves and finally get the much-awaited renovation rollin'. They sweat up beyond office hours to make sure the renovation will be finished in time for the school's opening two weeks from now.

I have always been curious and amazed how some people can really have that zeal for something so ephemeral as today's technology. As one of the emancipating or 'new breed' of librarians, admittedly, I am not really that techno savvy or web savvy. If a student were to ask me to "connect" the following terms: SQL, JAVA, JOOMLA, and Web 2.0 before last week, I would have been as stiff as a dead log in front of him/her. Well, not exactly. I could have begged a little time to do reference work and get back to him/her later... THANK GOODNESS FOR REFERENCE WORK! Otherwise, I really would have messed up or failed to answer the student's query.

Suddenly, one would ask: what would be the situation like for our fellow veteran librarians who have seasoned in the profession cope with such "demand" for IT-driven libraries or digital libraries for that matter? How do they deliver library service in the most efficient manner (as today's technology offers) amid the so-called 'gap' in the profession? Now I don't want to sound so fatalistic because Yes, they WILL continue to deliver :D

Web Technologies: Training for Development of Library and Teaching Resources is a three-day seminar (March 10 - 12, 2010) spearheaded by the Philippine Association of Librarians Inc. (PLAI) and Philippine ELibrary (Phil. eLib) in cooperation with the UP Information Technology Training Center (UP ITTC) aimed to train our librarians basic IT tricks such as (take a deep breathe) video sharing...collaboration...web hosting...evaluation of web resources...(hold a little longer) video/file sharing system...JOOMLA... SQL...MySQL... Web 2.0... HTML... XML...(okay stop! breathe :D) Seriously now, yes, the seminar was all about these and more but the main goal was to learn what they are and how to INTEGRATE all of them in to one system and create a web-based library service.

Imagine a classroom-setting type of seminar with seasoned librarians as your classmates speaking the language of IT. It was a little less than easy for them but what was something to really marvel on was their eagerness to LEARN and DELIVER. There had to be a starting point so we had to go through discussing as basic as creating an email account or a blog, yes, a FACEBOOK account to eventually more complex IT concepts.

During snack and lunch breaks we (the younger ones) would sit down with them and ask how they were doing.

It was indeed a wonderful experience especially counting as my very first seminar as a librarian. It adds to the truism that being a student or learning indeed doesn't end after finishing a degree nor has an age limit. And yes, information is not information unless shared. Next week, I'm scheduled to echo everything that I've learned in the seminar to my colleagues here in CSA-Makati.

CSA HS Librarians and the Mendiola Consortium

Last, November 26, 2009, the Mendiola Consortium, in celebration of the National Book Week, spearheaded a forum on library marketing strategies entitled "LIBRARY @ ITS BEST: MARKETING/ PROMOTION THAT WORKS" at the Pamanang Bedista, San Beda College, Mendiola Manila. The keynote speaker was Dr. Maria Victoria C. Ac-ac, Chairperson of the Marketing and Corporate Communications Department of San Beda College.

Dr. Ac-ac shared marketing strategies that are suitable for a library setting; more aggressive and novel ways to encourage students and faculty to use the library; even tips on enhancing the image of the librarians... TOTALLY SAYING GOODBYE TO THE STEREOTYPE MS. TAPIA LIBRARIAN! Afterwhich, participants had a short workshop on creating marketing plans. CSA Librarians were teamed up with the librarians from St. Scholastica's College and decided to work on the concept of user satisfaction in libraries.

Though the morning seminar was just the tip-of-the-iceberg of the whole concept of marketing strategies for libraries, it was indeed a fun and informative seminar.

After lunch, the CSA HS Librarians conducted library visits to the College of Holy Spirit and La Consolacion College both in Mendiola, Manila to share/exchange ideas with other school librarians on developing the library's collection management and services.

A whole-day library activity for CSA HS Librarians that really served as a wonderful refresher from the usual library work routine.

EDITORIAL from the Official Weekly Newletter of CSA

The Maguindanao Massacre, wherein 57 men and women, 34 of whom were journalists, were mercilessly mowed down by bullets, savagely slaughtered lIke animals and buried alive in mass graves in broad daylight, defies all rules of human decency and behavior.

The victims were about to file the certificate of candidacy of Buluan Vice Mayor Esmael Mangudadatu, who is running against Datu Unsay May Andal Ampatuan, Jr., for the gubernatorial seat in the 2010 national elections, when they were murdered by warlords of the place. The auspicious date was November 23, 2009; the killing fileds, atop a hill in Datu Unsay, Maguindanao.

Power and greed were the root causes of this dastardly and cowardly act, which blatantly disregarded the very basic right of a person to life.

It is unconscionable for us to look the other way and pretend that everything is okay, because everything is NOT OKAY. Values have been undermined; values have been screwed to suit the ends of a few depraved minds given to the drunken pleasure of power...of control...of greed.

We condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the brazen massacre of the innocent civilians. We condemn the acts of the evil perpetrators of this crime. We condemn the extremely slow grind of justice.

Let us instill in our children the values of respect...of justice...of peace...and of love right here at CSA, right now!

This horrific carnage should never, ever happen again.

The CSA HS Library Celebrates The National Book Week

Last November 25, 2009, club time, the CSA HS Library in cooperation with the Student Activity Center (SAC) and Readers and Writers Co. celebrated the National Book Week through an activity called The Amazing Race: The CSA HS Library Way! It simulated the concept of the reality TV series “The Amazing Race” with a twist.

Since the objectives of the activity are: to promote the support for Filipino-authored works; instill the value of the library use; and appreciate its role in the CSA community, the race covered various concepts related to the library and names of renowned Filipino authors/personalities.

There were 10 stations for the whole race; each constituted a physical or mental challenge and represented a discipline or field of knowledge based on the the Dewey Decimal Classification System.

In the end, out of the 22 clubs who joined, 3 names emerged as winners:

1st place: The Augustinian Brotherhood (Gabriel Edjawan & Angelo Valdepeñas)
2nd place: Piglas-Diwa (Jamie Lou Conner & Jurico Kai Agustin)
3rd place: Mu Epsilon Society (Joaquin Javier & Jude Diñoso)

It was indeed a test of endurance: a race against time and a test of one’s knowledge and skills. A very physical yet fruitful way of celebrating the National Book Week.

"Donate-A-Book: Help Us Rebuild the Library’s Collection++" (A CALL TO ALL CSA HS ALUMNI)

A couple of months ago, our nation has witnessed the wrath of typhoon Ondoy as it brought wreckage to thousands of Filipino homes; taking lives and displacing thousands of Filipino families. Its rage did not see any social stature, religion, nor age.

As some members of the CSA Community experienced the wrath in their own homes ; CSA, our second home, was neither spared from the wreckage. The HS Library experienced tremendous loss as great amount of books and other library materials were swept from the shelves by the typhoon. While some at this moment are still being salvaged, a lot of books were beyond repair thus were already thrown.

Two months have past and thankfully, we have in a little yet relevant sense recuperated from the deluge. However, the damage it caused to the library’s collection cannot be easily mended; fast replacement for the lost/damaged books is not easy to do.

In this light, the HS Library has come up with “Donate-A-Book: Help Us Rebuild the Library’s Collection++”, a book donation program wherein members of the CSA Community and Alumni may participate to help alleviate the library’s collection by donating books and other library materials (new or old). All donated books and materials will be subject for evaluation, books or materials that are deemed not suitable for the library’s target audience will then be forwared or donated to outside institutions (public libraries or organizations with book/literacy campaigns) that would be of greater purpose for them. Initially, the HS Library has chosen the AHON Foundation, the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Program of Filway International as its beneficiary.

The official launch of the program will be on December 7, 2009, 7:30am at the CSA HS LIBRARY.we invite all CSA HS Alumni to come and join us in this very meaningful occasion. Through our collective efforts, we can rebuild the HS library collection and help in the nationwide literacy campaign.
